A Word of Faith

The "Word of Faith" ministries, principally out of Oklahoma and Texas have notable Ministers past and present: Oral Roberts, Kenneth Hagan; Jerry Savelle, Joel Osteen, and Kenneth Copeland. They teach that Jesus passed the baton to us believers. We have all the rights and privileges that Jesus won for us at the Cross. Jesus said, "The works that I do shall (you) do also; and greater works than these shall (you) do...."

(John 14.12).

They teach that in order for believers to do the works of Jesus, we need to speak the Word into being. They quote Romans 10.8: "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart -- that is, the word of faith which we are preaching." This means that our faith is filled with the assurance that Jesus is Lord, and we can "do all things through Him" (Phil. 4.13).

John writes, "For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world -- our faith" (1 Jn.5.4). The English evangelist / healer Smith Wigglesworth is the shining example of this faith.

Nevertheless, Word of Faith preachers have received a lot of criticism from the Evangelical community, mainly because some have over-emphasized prosperity, and their lifestyles have been overly opulent. This is unfortunate because it detracts from the truth of the message.

We are Jesus' disciples in the world; He gave the work to us. His divine intention is that we should have faith in Him to heal the sick, cast out demons and raise the dead just as He did. Does this sound too fantastic? Maybe not.

When we speak words of faith, especially as we speak the Scriptures, we are facilitating the power and presence of the Holy Spirit, who continues the work of Jesus on this earth until He comes again.
