The Building Fund

Thanks for giving to our building fund. The thermometer is going up! Take a look inside the addition. The walls are framed up for the specific locations of bathrooms, classroom, utility, and sprinkler riser room, plus storage.

Next: moving the electrical panel and propane service. Keep praying!

Victory Village Dedication

After four years of delays God has answered our prayers. This was not just another event among many. It celebrates the God-given vision that moved many to act on behalf of the homeless. Not a week goes by that Pastor Tom doesn't have a couple of calls from clients who are homeless. These people are those who've had personal crises, like job loss. They are capable of recovery, but they need help in the short run.

They have already had people graduate from this program which means SUCCESS! THEY ARE OFF THE STREETS AND HAVE JOBS!!!

Dig Deeper Bible School Graduation

Congratulations to Emagene, Cyrus, Oliver and Angelina Cooper, who all graduated this week from the local "Dig Deeper Bible School." This is a program for youth to teach them the deeper meaning of the Christian faith. Well done!

PLEASE STAY FOR THE CELEBRATION POTLUCK RIGHT AFTER CHURCH!

This Friday night, August 11th at 6:00 pm in our church, we'll be showing “JOHNNY” A heartwarming film for the whole family!!

Pastoral Ministry

It's not what you think. Having served in Christian ministry these 50 years, I can say a word or two about it.

My son Clint, as a child expressed one attitude in the local church, when he was asked what he wanted to do. He said, "Be a pastor, so I only have to work one day a week." Yeah, well, there's more to it than that.

The main responsibility of a pastor is to develop a stronger relationship with God. We do this by spending quality time in prayer and Bible study each day, but you rarely find prayer and Bible study listed on a pastor's job description. Why? Because church people want to see results: programs for the potpourri of human needs in the church; church growth in attendance and membership; baptisms and financial prosperity.

The problem being, if the pastor does not spend time with God, then his ministry efforts in the church are for nought. Oh, you can have human efforts racking up results, but the results are empty of spirit.

This is what's happened to the denominational church in America. They've trained their pastors to be little CEO's who are hired to "make it happen."

Well, this may sound a bit pious and I don't mean it to be, but I work for a Jewish carpenter, not for the local church.

So, what do us pastors do, after spending time with God in prayer and Bible study? First and foremost, we preach the word. That requires long hours of study. On average, it takes us pastors 15-20 hours a week to prepare a sermon. Then add to that our preparation for teaching the word in Bible studies. After this comes the daily ministry to people. It means spending a lot of time on the cell phone and time visiting with God's people. In between all this, and often as an interruption, there are all the local church chores, like getting supplies, seeing that finances are in order, paying bills and keeping current with insurance, building needs, and set-ups for meetings. Then there are Board and Staff meetings; minutes that must be kept and sessions managed.

You may say, "Well, delegate all those chores to the body. Yes, it makes sense, until you try to do it. I've lost count of the times that I've had to set-up for meetings because no one else is available.

Serving God's ministry in the name of Jesus is a pleasure and a privilege, but it's never been easy. Give thanks to God for your pastors, for "we keep watch over your souls, as those who will give an account. Let (us) do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you" (Heb.13.17).
