I Am

Our God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, is the great "I Am."

When Moses saw the bush aflame that did not burn in the Midian wilderness, and He encountered the God of his people, he asked, "Now they may say to me, 'What is His name?' What shall I say to them" (Ex.3.13c)? "And God said to Moses, 'I Am Who I Am' ...'Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, I Am has sent me to you'" (3.14).

This has become the sacred name of God, which to the best of our knowledge is in Hebrew, YHWH...or, Yahweh. The name is not pronounced by the Jew in reverential fear of the All Mighty One. Instead, the Jew says LORD.

The Latinized version is "Jehovah."

This name of God makes perfect sense because He is the source of all "being." He is life itself. We remember that when God created man in the garden that he "formed our ancestor Adam from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and (Adam) became a living being" (Gen.2.7).

The Hebrew says, "a living soul,'' but the sense of a "being," someone who is alive and aware is held throughout the Scriptures.

Our God is the God of Being. He is that One who from the beginning was, and is, and evermore shall Be. His existence, doubted by some, misunderstood by others, is testified to daily in our lives. For life is all around us. All things have being, because of the "Being," who first breathed life into His creation.
