Joyful Agreement
Nothing kills our joy more than personality conflicts resulting in issue conflicts. As believers in Jesus Christ, we have the spiritual power to rebuke these conflicts, "bear one another's burdens," and "persevere" through disagreements into the future (Gal.6.2; Rom.5.3-5).
Jesus plainly tells us that, "...My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full" (John 15.11b). We also know from Nehemiah that "the joy of the Lord is (our) strength" (Neh.8.10c). Yes, the Lord's joy is real in the heart of the believer. We don't have to grit our teeth and try to be joyful; we just receive it. But..."receiving" is probably one of the most difficult things for us to do, especially as we've been trained to be self-sufficient.
It all has to do with depending on the Lord. We may think that He's too busy to care about our petty needs, but He's always near (Phil.4.5). His spiritual presence indwells us (John 14.23; Acts Acts 19.6; 1 Cor.6.19). All we have to do is abide in His Word and receive His promises (John 15.4,7).
Paul was dealing with squabbles in the New Testament Churches all the time. He writes to the Corinthians, who arose from more pagan and hostile roots than most, "...that you all agree, and there be no divisions among you, but you be made complete in the same mind and the same judgment...that there be no quarrels among you" (1 Cor.1.10- 11) Well, easier said than done; however, if you abide in God's Word and His joy (as promised) is in you, then it's more than possible to get along with others.
By coming to saving faith in Jesus Christ, we are "joyfully agreeing" to "do things Jesus' Way, by Jesus' teaching, and to His glory."
May your "joy be full," and especially, at Christmas time.
