The Russian author, Leo Tolstoy, published his novel War and Peace, in 1869, right after the American Civil War. Tolstoy wrote about the Napoleonic wars and their social and economic impacts, especially as France invaded Russia. The book is a classic and so are Tolstoy's insights into the rude reality of men and nations in conflict.
The question for us is where does the Christian stand when it comes to war and peace? This question is playing out right now in Israel as "the chosen people of God" are again at war with the Canaanites.
It's easy to take the naturalists view of an "eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth," but Jesus had something to say about that (Matt.5.38-39). The Lord's teaching to "turn the other cheek" goes down hard. Likewise, is Paul's comment to the Romans, "Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, 'Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,' says the LORD" (Rom.12.19).
Okay, so where does this leave us with a serious, evil enemy like ISIS or Hamas? Well, don't we (or nations) have the right to defend ourselves? Of course, but that's the wrong question. We should always be asking, "What would Jesus do?" Jesus did not shoot first and ask questions later; He always sought the peaceful solution. Didn't He teach us: "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you..." (John 14.27).
Perhaps...just perhaps...since Jesus is our Lord and Savior, we might not be foolish for trusting Him in faith and His peace to bring us through every conflict that could result in war.
